Chinese Red Dog Registry
Pedigree & Recognition FAQ

What is the purpose of the registry?

The registry helps maintain accurate records of Chinese Red Dogs internationally, preserving pedigree information and supporting responsible development of the breed outside China.

By keeping structured lineage information, the registry helps ensure the history of the breed is not lost as the population grows globally.

Our guiding principle is: Protect • Preserve • Progress

Is this an official replacement for CKU?

No.

The Chinese Kennel Union (CKU) is the official registry for the breed within China.

The international registry supports accurate record keeping outside China, helping preserve lineage information where CKU documentation may not always be available or easily obtained.

The aim is to ensure pedigree information remains organised and transparent internationally.

Why is pedigree information important?

Pedigree records help show how dogs are related across generations.

This helps:

• preserve knowledge of founding lines
• maintain clarity as the population grows
• support responsible breeding decisions
• understand how the breed is developing internationally

Without accurate pedigree records, important information about the breed can become lost over time.

What are founding lines?

Founding lines refer to the original dogs from which the international population descends.

Because the Chinese Red Dog population outside China is still relatively small, many dogs trace back to a limited number of foundation dogs.

Recording these lines helps ensure:

• lineage information remains accurate
• relationships between dogs are understood
• the breed develops in a structured way

Early pedigree records are often the most important in developing breeds.

Why does the number of lines matter?

For a breed to become recognised outside its country of origin, there must be evidence that the population is:

• large enough
• genetically diverse enough
• consistently traceable
• developing in a stable way

This is demonstrated through multiple distinct pedigree lines across several generations.

We are now very close to having the number of dogs and lines typically required to demonstrate that the breed is established internationally.

How does the registry support future recognition of the breed?

Recognition bodies need to see evidence that a breed is developing in a stable and responsible way outside its country of origin.

Accurate records help demonstrate:

• multiple distinct lines are present
• pedigree information is preserved
• the population is growing internationally
• the breed is being responsibly stewarded

The registry helps ensure this information is available and organised if needed to support future recognition discussions.

Do I need CKU papers to register my dog?

No.

Dogs can still be recorded even if CKU documentation is not available.

Where CKU papers do exist, the CKU registration number can be linked to the dog’s profile, along with supporting documentation.

Maintaining accurate records internationally helps preserve lineage information that might otherwise be lost.

Can dogs from outside the UK be registered?

Yes.

The registry accepts dogs from all countries.

Chinese Red Dogs are now located across the UK, USA, Europe and other regions.

Maintaining international records helps connect lineage information across borders and preserve a clearer picture of how the breed is developing globally.

Why is record keeping especially important right now?

The Chinese Red Dog is still an emerging breed outside China.

Early records help:

• preserve the history of the breed internationally
• maintain clarity as new generations are born
• support responsible decisions
• ensure pedigree information remains accurate

Accurate early records often become the foundation for long-term understanding of the breed.

How many dogs are currently recorded?

The registry grows consistently with dogs across multiple countries.

Many of these dogs trace back to key founding lines now present internationally.

Each additional registration helps improve the accuracy and completeness of the global picture of the breed. For up to date numbers please see social media updates or email us info@chinesereddogregistry.org

How does registering help the breed?

Each registered dog helps:

• strengthen pedigree knowledge
• preserve lineage information
• improve understanding of the population
• support responsible development of the breed
• build a reliable international record

Every accurate record contributes to the long-term future of the Chinese Red Dog.
